Plastic Surgery

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Plastic surgery is a specialized medical field focused on enhancing, reconstructing, or repairing physical appearances through surgical and non-surgical techniques. The practice encompasses a wide range of procedures, from aesthetic enhancements such as facelifts, liposuction, and rhinoplasty, to reconstructive surgeries like breast reconstruction after mastectomy, cleft palate repair, and scar revisions. These procedures are performed by board-certified plastic surgeons who utilize advanced techniques to achieve natural and aesthetically pleasing results.

The process of plastic surgery typically begins with an in-depth consultation between the surgeon and the patient. This meeting aims to align the patient's expectations with realistic outcomes and to discuss the most suitable techniques. Plastic surgeons assess the patient’s physical condition, medical history, and goals to tailor a personalized treatment plan. Procedures are performed under anesthesia to ensure patient comfort and safety, and modern techniques have greatly improved recovery time and minimized scarring.

Plastic surgery is not limited to cosmetic enhancements; it also plays a crucial role in reconstructive surgeries that restore function and appearance after trauma, burns, or congenital deformities. With advancements in technology, minimally invasive procedures such as injectables, laser treatments, and endoscopic surgeries have also become popular, offering patients quicker recovery times and less post-operative discomfort.

Procedure Duration

The duration of plastic surgery varies greatly depending on the specific procedure, the complexity of the case, and whether it is performed as a single operation or in multiple stages. For example, minor aesthetic procedures like Botox injections or chemical peels can take less than an hour and require little to no downtime, while more comprehensive surgeries such as tummy tucks or breast augmentations can take several hours and involve a more extended recovery period.

During the surgery, anesthesia is administered, and the surgeon performs the necessary incisions, alterations, or enhancements based on the planned approach. Post-operative care is an essential part of the surgical process and usually involves a period of monitoring to ensure that there are no complications and that the patient is stable. In most cases, patients can return home within the same day for outpatient procedures, while more complex surgeries may require an overnight stay or several days of hospitalization.

The recovery period depends largely on the type of procedure performed and the patient’s overall health. Minimally invasive procedures may have little to no recovery time, whereas extensive surgeries like facelifts or body contouring may require several weeks to months for full healing. Patients are advised to follow their surgeon’s post-operative instructions closely, which may include wearing compression garments, avoiding strenuous activities, and attending follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process.

Benefits of Plastic Surgery

  • Enhanced Physical Appearance: One of the main benefits of plastic surgery is the enhancement of a person's appearance, leading to improved self-confidence and body image.
  • Reconstructive Improvements: Procedures like cleft palate repair, breast reconstruction, and scar revisions restore physical function and correct congenital deformities or trauma-related injuries.
  • Emotional Well-being: Achieving the desired physical change can lead to greater mental and emotional well-being, contributing to improved social interactions and quality of life.
  • Minimally Invasive Options: With advancements in technology, many procedures now offer minimally invasive options that reduce scarring, decrease recovery time, and lower the risk of complications.
  • Long-lasting Results: Many plastic surgery procedures provide long-lasting or even permanent results, helping patients maintain their desired look for years.

Risks & Considerations

  • Anesthesia Complications: The administration of anesthesia carries risks such as allergic reactions, respiratory problems, or adverse responses, especially in patients with preexisting health conditions.
  • Infection: Despite sterilization protocols, any surgical procedure poses a risk of infection at the incision site, which can lead to complications and extended recovery.
  • Scarring and Bruising: While surgeons strive to minimize scarring, certain procedures may leave visible scars or bruises that take time to heal or may require additional treatment.
  • Blood Clots and Hematoma: Some patients may experience blood clots or hematomas (a collection of blood outside blood vessels) following surgery, which may need medical attention.
  • Emotional and Psychological Impact: Undergoing plastic surgery can have emotional implications. It's important for patients to have realistic expectations and to discuss potential psychological effects with their healthcare provider.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

Selecting the right doctor and hospital is paramount to ensuring a safe and successful plastic surgery experience. Start by researching board-certified plastic surgeons who have extensive experience in the specific procedure you are considering. Verify their qualifications, surgical outcomes, and patient reviews. Many surgeons also provide before-and-after photos of past patients, which can give you a clearer idea of their work.

When choosing a hospital or clinic, make sure it is accredited by recognized international standards and equipped with modern medical technology. It is also advisable to communicate directly with the clinic to understand their pre-operative care, post-operative support, and any inclusions for international patients, such as travel arrangements, accommodations, and language support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
