MRI Chest

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the chest is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to obtain detailed images of the structures within the thorax, including the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and surrounding tissues. Utilizing powerful magnetic fields, radio waves, and a computer, an MRI Chest provides comprehensive visualizations that aid in diagnosing various medical conditions, such as heart diseases, lung abnormalities, and certain cancers. It is a preferred imaging method when high-resolution images are necessary to guide further medical decisions.

Unlike other imaging methods, such as X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not involve ionizing radiation, making it a safer option for patients needing multiple scans or those who have conditions that require detailed imaging. MRI Chest can be crucial for evaluating structural abnormalities, inflammatory conditions, infections, or tumors. This procedure is often requested when other imaging techniques are inconclusive, or when high-detail images are essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

The MRI Chest procedure offers both anatomic and functional information, allowing for precise assessments. For example, it can be used to evaluate cardiac function, blood flow, and lung tissue condition. This multifaceted approach is highly valuable in cases involving congenital heart diseases, soft tissue masses, aneurysms, and more. With continuous advancements in MRI technology, this imaging technique has become a cornerstone of thoracic diagnostics.

Procedure Duration

The MRI Chest procedure generally lasts between 30 to 60 minutes, although this can vary depending on the complexity of the case and the need for contrast agents. Patients lie still within a large cylindrical machine, and the process begins with preliminary scans to ensure proper positioning and imaging quality. Typically, the patient is instructed to hold their breath for short periods to minimize motion artifacts and improve the quality of images obtained.

The scan can be performed with or without a contrast agent, a substance injected into the bloodstream to enhance the visibility of specific tissues or blood vessels. The use of contrast agents, usually gadolinium-based, may slightly extend the procedure's duration and requires a prior evaluation for potential allergies or kidney function issues. Patients may hear rhythmic thumping sounds as the machine operates, which is entirely normal and can be mitigated with ear protection.

Recovery from an MRI Chest is typically immediate, as there is no use of sedation or invasive interventions. Patients who receive contrast agents are advised to hydrate well post-procedure to help eliminate the contrast from their body. The radiologist will review the images captured during the MRI and prepare a detailed report for the referring physician, who will discuss the results and subsequent steps with the patient.

Benefits

  • High-Resolution Imaging: Provides detailed images of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, aiding in precise diagnoses.

  • Claustrophobia or Anxiety:
The enclosed nature of the MRI machine can trigger claustrophobia or anxiety in some patients. Open MRI machines or sedation options may be available for those who are uncomfortable.
  • Potential Allergic Reaction to Contrast Agents:
Though rare, some patients may experience an allergic reaction to gadolinium-based contrast agents. It's essential to discuss any known allergies or past reactions with the medical team before the procedure.
  • Kidney Function Concerns:
Since contrast agents are processed by the kidneys, patients with renal impairment need careful evaluation before receiving contrast-enhanced MRI Chest.
  • Noise During the Scan:
The MRI machine produces loud, repetitive noises that can be unsettling. Ear protection or headphones can be provided to mitigate this issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
