Upper Body Lift

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

An upper body lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at reshaping and contouring the upper half of the body. This typically involves the removal of excess skin and fatty tissues from areas such as the back, upper arms, breasts, and sometimes the abdomen. Individuals who have undergone significant weight loss or have age-related sagging skin often find that exercise and dieting alone are not enough to address the loose, excess skin. The upper body lift serves as a solution to these issues, providing a more toned and youthful body contour.

The procedure targets various areas of the upper body, tailoring the approach to each patient's needs. For instance, an upper arm lift (brachioplasty) tightens and reshapes the skin around the arms, while a breast lift (mastopexy) reshapes and elevates the breasts for a more aesthetically pleasing contour. Additionally, back lifts (upper or lower) target loose skin around the back, providing a smoother and more sculpted appearance. Depending on the patient's goals, the surgery can focus on one or multiple areas of the upper body to achieve the desired look.

The aim of an upper body lift is not only to remove excess skin but also to improve the overall shape and tone of the upper body. In some cases, the procedure may be combined with liposuction to further enhance contouring. The results of an upper body lift are generally long-lasting, provided the patient maintains a stable weight and follows a healthy lifestyle.

Procedure Duration

The duration of an upper body lift can vary significantly depending on the extent of the procedure, the number of areas being treated, and the patient's unique needs. On average, the surgery can last anywhere between 3 to 6 hours. During the surgery, a series of incisions are made along natural body creases to minimize visible scarring. The surgeon will remove excess skin, tighten the underlying tissues, and re-drape the remaining skin for a smoother contour. If multiple areas are being addressed, such as the arms, back, and breasts, the surgery time may be longer.

The recovery process following an upper body lift is critical to achieving optimal results. Patients are usually advised to stay in the hospital for a day or two after the surgery for close monitoring. Initial recovery may take about 2 to 3 weeks, during which patients need to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common in the initial recovery phase, but these symptoms gradually improve over time. A comprehensive recovery plan is provided by the surgical team, detailing how to care for incisions, manage pain, and gradually resume regular activities.

A full recovery from an upper body lift may take up to 6 weeks or more, depending on the extent of the surgery. Scarring is expected, but these will usually fade and become less noticeable over time. Adherence to the postoperative care instructions is crucial for minimizing complications and ensuring that the surgical outcomes are as desired.

Risks & Considerations

  • Scarring: An upper body lift involves incisions, which will leave scars. Although surgeons take care to place incisions in less visible areas, some scarring is inevitable, and the healing process varies by individual.
  • Infection: As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of infection. Patients must adhere to postoperative care instructions to minimize this risk and monitor their healing progress closely.
  • Prolonged Swelling and Bruising: Swelling and bruising are common after an upper body lift. While these symptoms generally subside within weeks, they can take longer to completely resolve.
  • Numbness or Changes in Sensation: Some patients may experience numbness or changes in sensation around the incision areas. This is usually temporary but can occasionally be long-lasting.
  • Asymmetry or Unsatisfactory Results: Achieving perfect symmetry can be challenging, and there may be instances where patients are not completely satisfied with their results. It's essential to have realistic expectations and communicate clearly with the surgeon about desired outcomes.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

Selecting the right doctor and hospital for an upper body lift is a crucial decision. Patients should look for a board-certified plastic surgeon with substantial experience in body contouring procedures. A surgeon's credentials, reviews from previous patients, and before-and-after photos of past procedures can provide insight into their expertise and quality of work. Additionally, having an open discussion with the surgeon about the procedure, recovery expectations, and any potential complications will help in building trust and making an informed decision.

When choosing a hospital, accreditation and international standards of care should be top priorities. Hospitals that have passed stringent quality assessments and adhere to global healthcare practices often provide a safe environment for surgical procedures. It is also beneficial to consider the facility's support services, such as patient coordinators who can assist with the logistics of traveling abroad for surgery, including accommodation, language support, and postoperative care.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
