Family planning
Steps Involved in IVF:
Procedure Description
Family planning encompasses a broad range of medical procedures and choices that empower individuals and couples to control the timing and size of their family. It involves various medical and lifestyle interventions aimed at preventing unintended pregnancies, spacing childbirths, and managing fertility. Common methods include hormonal contraception (pills, patches, injections), intrauterine devices (IUDs), sterilization techniques (tubal ligation, vasectomy), and natural family planning methods (calendar tracking, ovulation monitoring).
Contraception is one of the most widely practiced family planning strategies. It involves temporary or permanent methods to prevent conception. Hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills, regulate or inhibit ovulation and are taken daily. IUDs are small devices inserted into the uterus to block sperm from fertilizing an egg, with some options lasting up to 10 years. Sterilization, another aspect of family planning, is a permanent solution for those who no longer wish to conceive. Tubal ligation (for women) and vasectomy (for men) are surgical procedures that close or block the reproductive pathways to prevent fertilization.
Natural family planning methods, on the other hand, do not involve medical intervention. They require individuals to track menstrual cycles, basal body temperature, and cervical mucus to predict fertile days. While these methods can be effective when practiced accurately, they require rigorous tracking and a deep understanding of one's body cycles. The primary objective of family planning is to provide couples with control over their reproductive health, ensuring that pregnancies occur by choice and under optimal conditions.
Procedure Duration
The duration of family planning procedures varies significantly based on the chosen method. Hormonal contraceptives like birth control pills are generally taken daily, while patches and injections have set schedules (weekly or quarterly). IUD insertion is a relatively short procedure, taking only a few minutes to perform, and offers long-term contraception ranging from 3 to 10 years, depending on the type. In the case of permanent methods, such as tubal ligation or vasectomy, the surgical procedures usually take about 30 minutes to an hour, followed by a recovery period of a few days to weeks.
The recovery time for family planning procedures depends on the type of method used. Most hormonal contraceptives do not require a recovery period, but some women may experience side effects such as nausea, headaches, or spotting as their bodies adjust. IUD insertion can cause discomfort and cramping for a day or two, while more invasive procedures like tubal ligation and vasectomy may require rest and avoidance of strenuous activities for a few days. Follow-up visits are often recommended to ensure the effectiveness of the method and to monitor for any complications.
Natural family planning requires ongoing tracking and commitment. It is not a one-time procedure but a continuous process that involves understanding and predicting fertility patterns. Couples need to maintain consistent record-keeping of menstrual cycles, basal body temperature, and other indicators of fertility. This approach is less invasive and more holistic, but it demands significant time and attention to detail for optimal results.
Benefits
- Empowerment and Control Over Reproduction: Family planning allows individuals and couples to decide if and when to have children, giving them control over their reproductive lives.
- Health Benefits for Women: Contraceptive use can regulate menstrual cycles, reduce the risk of anemia, lower the incidence of certain cancers, and protect against sexually transmitted infections (when using barrier methods).
- Economic Stability and Improved Quality of Life: By allowing families to plan and space out their pregnancies, financial strain can be minimized, and resources can be allocated more effectively to ensure a higher quality of life.
- Reduced Maternal and Infant Mortality Rates: Proper family planning reduces the risk of unintended pregnancies, which are often associated with higher rates of maternal and infant mortality.
- Encourages Gender Equality and Female Empowerment: Access to family planning options enables women to pursue educational and professional opportunities, balancing career and family aspirations.

Risks & Considerations
- Hormonal Side Effects: Some family planning methods, such as oral contraceptives, can have side effects like nausea, headaches, weight gain, and mood changes. It's essential to discuss potential reactions with a healthcare provider.
- Surgical Complications: Procedures like tubal ligation and vasectomy carry risks associated with surgery, including infections, bleeding, and anesthesia-related complications. Recovery time and post-surgery care should be considered.
- Contraceptive Failure Rates: While most family planning methods are highly effective, no method is 100% foolproof. Couples should be aware of potential failure rates and the need for backup methods in some cases.
- Lifestyle and Compliance: Some family planning techniques require strict adherence to schedules or lifestyle changes. Missing doses of birth control pills or improper use of barrier methods can reduce effectiveness.
- Limited Reversibility: Certain procedures, such as tubal ligation and vasectomy, are intended to be permanent and may not always be reversible. Couples should be confident in their decision before opting for these methods.
How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital
When selecting a doctor or hospital for family planning, it’s crucial to prioritize safety, quality, and expertise. Look for healthcare providers who have a strong background in reproductive health and offer comprehensive consultations to discuss your options thoroughly. It's essential to ask about the doctor's experience with specific family planning procedures and ensure that they are certified by relevant medical boards.
The hospital or clinic should maintain a high standard of hygiene and be equipped with modern technology to handle the procedure safely. Patients should research the facility's reputation, read patient reviews, and consider international accreditation or quality certifications, as they are indicators of safety and excellence in healthcare. Additionally, having a transparent discussion about costs, recovery expectations, and post-procedure support is vital to ensure a positive experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?
The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.
What happens during egg retrieval?
When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
What happens to the eggs?
In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle. Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.
How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?
The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.
Embryoscope©
Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
