Bow Legs Correction

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Understanding Bow Legs Correction: Bow legs, medically termed "genu varum," is a condition where the legs curve outward at or below the knee, resulting in a distinctive appearance similar to an archer's bow. This deformity can be congenital, caused by growth abnormalities, or develop over time due to conditions such as rickets or osteoarthritis. While bow legs are normal in infants and toddlers, persistent curvature beyond early childhood often requires correction to prevent complications like joint pain, impaired gait, and premature arthritis.

The Objective of Bow Legs Correction: The main goal of bow legs correction is to achieve proper alignment of the legs, thus reducing stress on the joints and improving overall leg functionality and appearance. Corrective procedures are typically recommended for individuals experiencing pain, discomfort, difficulty in walking, or dissatisfaction with the appearance of their legs. Treatment approaches range from non-invasive therapies, such as physical therapy and orthotic devices, to surgical interventions for more severe cases.

Surgical Techniques in Bow Legs Correction: For significant deformities, surgery is the most effective option. The primary surgical procedures include osteotomy and guided growth surgery. In an osteotomy, the bones are cut and realigned to correct the deformity, followed by fixation using plates, screws, or external frames. Guided growth surgery, usually performed on children or adolescents with still-growing bones, involves temporarily restricting growth on one side of the bone to allow the opposite side to catch up, thus straightening the leg over time. Each technique is tailored to the patient's age, severity of the deformity, and overall health.

Procedure Duration

Duration of the Surgical Procedure:The duration of surgery to correct bow legs varies based on the type of procedure, the complexity of the deformity, and the patient's overall health. Typically, an osteotomy lasts around 1 to 2 hours per leg, although it may take longer in cases requiring additional correction or simultaneous treatment of both legs. Guided growth surgery tends to be shorter, often lasting less than an hour.

Recovery and Post-Surgical Phases:After surgery, the recovery phase is crucial for the success of the correction. Patients can expect to stay in the hospital for a few days to a week, depending on the type of surgery and any complications that may arise. Physical therapy is usually initiated early to promote mobility and muscle strength, and full weight-bearing on the legs is often delayed until the bones have sufficiently healed, which can take anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months or more.

Long-Term Healing and Outcomes:The timeline for complete recovery varies but usually spans 6 to 12 months for bone healing and leg realignment. During this period, patients must follow a structured rehabilitation program and periodic check-ups to monitor progress. While immediate improvements in leg alignment may be noticeable after surgery, optimal results are achieved gradually as the bones fully heal and muscles regain strength.

Benefits

  • Improved Leg Alignment: Surgical correction realigns the legs, providing a straighter, more aesthetically pleasing appearance.
  • Enhanced Mobility & Gait: Corrected bow legs reduce joint stress and improve walking patterns, enhancing mobility and balance.
  • Reduced Pain & Discomfort: Corrective surgery can alleviate pain associated with bow legs, including joint pain and muscle strain.
  • Prevention of Further Complications: Early correction can prevent secondary issues like osteoarthritis, joint degeneration, and impaired function.
  • Boosted Self-Esteem & Confidence: A significant improvement in leg alignment and gait often results in enhanced body image and psychological well-being.

Risks & Considerations

  • Infection & Wound Healing Complications: As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection at the incision site or in the bone, requiring prompt medical attention.
  • Blood Clots: Patients undergoing bow legs correction may be at risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism. Preventative measures such as blood thinners and early mobilization are typically recommended.
  • Nerve or Blood Vessel Damage: The surgical area is in close proximity to nerves and blood vessels, and although rare, damage to these structures can lead to complications like numbness or impaired circulation.
  • Bone Healing Issues: Poor bone healing or delayed union may occur, particularly in patients with underlying health conditions such as diabetes or smokers, which can prolong recovery or necessitate additional surgery.
  • Leg Length Discrepancy: Depending on the extent of correction, some patients may experience a difference in leg length after the procedure, potentially requiring further treatment to balance alignment.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

When selecting a specialist for bow legs correction, it is essential to choose an orthopedic surgeon with extensive experience in treating limb deformities and a proven track record in corrective surgeries. Reviewing credentials, such as board certifications, years of practice, and surgical success rates, can provide insight into the surgeon's expertise. Additionally, it is advisable to seek a second opinion to confirm the proposed treatment plan.

Choosing the right hospital is equally important. Opt for a facility that is equipped with the latest medical technology and maintains high standards of safety and hygiene. Look for hospitals with dedicated orthopedic departments and multidisciplinary teams, which contribute to more comprehensive care and better patient outcomes. Checking for international accreditations and patient testimonials can also be helpful in ensuring quality care.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
