Crown – Indirect Resin Based Composite

Steps Involved in IVF:

Procedure Description

Indirect Resin Based Composite Crowns are an innovative dental solution designed to restore the function and aesthetics of damaged teeth. Unlike traditional crowns made from porcelain or metal, these crowns utilize a resin-based composite material that is durable, tooth-colored, and can be customized to blend seamlessly with the patient’s natural teeth. The term "indirect" refers to the fabrication of the crown outside the mouth, typically in a dental laboratory, before it is permanently cemented onto the prepared tooth.

The process begins with a detailed examination of the tooth that requires treatment. The dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and reshaping it to accommodate the crown. Impressions of the tooth are then taken and sent to a laboratory, where the composite crown is custom-made to fit perfectly over the prepared tooth. This process ensures a precise fit and a natural look, making the crown both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Once the crown is ready, the dentist will place it on the tooth to check for fit and bite alignment. After any necessary adjustments, the crown is permanently bonded to the tooth using a specialized dental adhesive. This ensures that the crown stays securely in place while restoring the tooth's strength and appearance.

Procedure Duration

The placement of an Indirect Resin Based Composite Crown is typically completed in two main appointments. The first appointment involves the preparation of the tooth, which may take around 60-90 minutes. During this time, the dentist will remove any damaged or decayed tissue, reshape the tooth, and take impressions. A temporary crown may be placed to protect the prepared tooth while the permanent crown is being fabricated.

The second appointment, usually scheduled one to two weeks later, involves the fitting and cementation of the crown. This visit may last approximately 30-60 minutes. The dentist will carefully position the crown, ensure the fit is perfect, and bond it permanently to the tooth. In some modern dental practices, same-day crowns may be an option, thanks to advancements in CAD/CAM technology, which allow for in-office milling of the crown.

Recovery from the procedure is typically straightforward. Patients may experience mild sensitivity or discomfort in the affected area for a few days, but this usually resolves quickly. The resin-based composite material is less prone to causing allergic reactions or discomfort, and it generally adapts well to the natural tooth structure.

Benefits

  • Aesthetic Appeal: The resin-based composite material closely mimics the color and texture of natural teeth, providing a highly aesthetic result.
  • Minimally Invasive: Compared to other crown types, indirect resin-based composite crowns require less tooth removal, preserving more of the natural tooth structure.
  • Durability: These crowns offer excellent resistance to wear and tear, providing long-term durability while maintaining their aesthetic quality.
  • Cost-Effective: Indirect resin-based composite crowns are often more affordable than all-porcelain or gold crowns, making them a cost-effective solution for dental restoration.
  • Biocompatibility: The resin material is biocompatible, reducing the risk of allergic reactions or sensitivity for patients.

Risks & Considerations

  • Wear Over Time: While resin-based composite crowns are durable, they may not last as long as porcelain or metal crowns and might require replacement after several years.
  • Staining: The composite material may be more prone to discoloration over time compared to ceramic or porcelain crowns, especially for patients who consume staining substances like coffee or tobacco.
  • Tooth Sensitivity: Some patients may experience temporary sensitivity after the procedure, particularly if the tooth was extensively prepared before the crown placement.
  • Fracture Risk: Although strong, resin-based composite crowns are not as fracture-resistant as metal or porcelain options, particularly under high-pressure chewing forces.
  • Allergic Reactions: Although rare, there is a slight possibility of an allergic reaction to the resin material used in the crown. It’s essential to discuss any known allergies with your dentist before undergoing the procedure.

How to Choose the Right Doctor and Hospital

Selecting the right doctor and hospital is crucial for ensuring the success of your dental procedure. When choosing a dentist for an indirect resin-based composite crown, look for a dental specialist with experience in restorative and cosmetic dentistry. It’s important to verify the credentials of the dentist, including their training and certifications, to ensure they are well-qualified to perform the procedure. Online reviews and testimonials from previous patients can also provide valuable insights into the quality of care.

For hospitals or clinics, prioritize those with modern dental technology and a strong reputation for patient safety and high standards of hygiene. It’s also wise to confirm that the facility is accredited by international healthcare bodies, which ensures adherence to global standards of care. Finally, consider the proximity and ease of travel to the chosen destination, along with the cost of treatment and available post-procedure support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during hyperstimulation of the ovaries?

The patient will take injectable FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) for eight to eleven days, depending on how long the follicles take to mature. This hormone is produced naturally in a woman’s body causing one egg to develop per cycle. Taking the injectable FSH causes several follicles to develop at once, at approximately the same rate. The development is monitored with vaginal ultrasounds and following the patient’s levels of estradiol and progesterone. FSH brand names include Repronex, Follistim, Menopur, Gonal-F and Bravelle. The patient injects herself daily.

What happens during egg retrieval?

When the follicles have developed enough to be harvested, the patient attends an appointment  where she is anesthetized and prepared for the procedure. Next, the doctor uses an ultrasound probe to guide a needle through the vaginal wall and into the follicle of the ovary. The thin needle draws the follicle fluid, which is then examined by an embryologist to find the eggs. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

What happens to the eggs?

In the next step, the harvested eggs are then fertilized. If the sperm from the potential father, or in some cases, anonymous donor, has normal functionality, the eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish with a nutrient fluid, then incubated overnight to fertilize normally. If the sperm functionality is suboptimal, an embryologist uses Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection to inject a single sperm into a single egg with an extremely precise glass needle.  Once fertilization is complete, the embryos are assessed and prepared to be transferred to the patient’s uterus.

How are the embryos transferred back to the uterus?

The doctor and the patient will discuss the number of embryos to be transferred. The number of successfully fertilized eggs usually determines the number of eggs to be placed in the uterus. Embryos are transferred to the uterus with transabdominal ultrasound guidance. This process does not require anesthesia, but it can cause minor cervical or uterine discomfort. Following transfer, the patient is advised to take at least one days bed rest and two or three additional days of rest, then 10 to 12 days later, two pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm success. Once two positive tests are completed, an obstetrical ultrasound is ordered to show the sac, fetal pole, yolk sac and fetal heart rate.

Embryoscope©

Built into this technology there is a microscope with a powerful camera that allows the uninterrupted monitoring of the embryo during its first hours of life. In this way, we can keep a close eye on the embryo, from the moment when the oocyte is inseminated and begins to divide into smaller and smaller cells, until it can be transferred to the uterus.
