Erik Koornneef

Erik Koornneef is the VP Policy and Compliance for Malaffi, the health information exchange for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Malaffi was established in 2018 as a strategic Public Private Partnership (PPP) between the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DOH) and Injazat Data Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mubadala.  

Erik holds a M.Sc. In Health Services Management from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland and a M.Sc. in Educational Sciences from the Radboud University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands. In autumn 2019 he will defend his PhD thesis on the improvement of compliance with healthcare regulation at the School for Health Policy and Management, Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Erik has more than 20 years experience in healthcare settings and he has managed to successfully deliver multiple complex, large scale programs, at national and international level, in the areas of healthcare regulation, quality, health systems reform, monitoring and innovation. 

Prior to joining Malaffi, Erik worked as the Head of Healthcare for Cognit, a JV between IBM Watson and Mubadala. He has held several other senior roles in the region, including leadership roles with the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi, the UAE Ministry of Presidential Affairs and IBM Watson Health/Truven. Erik has lived in Abu Dhabi with his wife and three children since 2010.

Before moving to the UAE, Erik served in a variety of senior positions in the public service in Ireland with responsibility for the development of a set of overarching national standards in health care, as well as setting up and implementing a regulatory compliance audit system.
