The former capital city of the vice-kingdom of Guatemala, which included the current states of Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica, besides the current territory of Chiapas (Mexico) was founded in 1543 by the Spanish conquistadors. It was one of the most important cities in the extension of Spain in Latin America. It is characterized by its baroque churches which included Franciscan, Jesuit, and Dominican religious orders.


Located in the middle of the rain forests of Petén, Tikal one of the largest archeological sites of the pre-Columbian mayan civilization. Even though 4th century BC architecture can be found in Tikal, it reached its pinnacle during the Classic Period, circa 200 to 900 AD. The city dominated much of the Mayan region from a political, economic, military, and religious stand points. Tikal interacted with other great metropolis of Mesoamerica such as Teotihuacan, in the distant valley of Mexico. In 1979 it was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. The city of Tikal is rich in mayan architecture and history.
