Sightseeing
Argentina´s vast terrain has something to offer the snow bunny, the beach bunny, the city or the country guy or gal. For the outdoorsman (or woman), the popular and well preserved Patagonia Region stretches south of Buenos Aires all the way to the southern tip of Argentina. Its vast land area encompasses beaches, forests, national parks, mountains and Glaciers. Also, note that Argentina (contestedly) owns part of Antarctica and there are excursions available to the icy continent from the southern tip of Argentina. Peninsula Valdes, located on the Atlantic coast 870 miles (1,400 km) south of Buenos Aires, is a haven for wild animals and a popular spot for whale watching. It is also home to sea lions, penguins, elephant seals and many species of sea birds. The Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi is home to Lago (lake) Nahuel Huapi which encircles an island (Isla Victoria) that is home to rare species of trees and many exotic and rare animals. Last but definitely not least, no nature trip to Argentina is complete without going to the magnificent Iguazu Falls. Located on the border of Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil, it consists of 275 falls along over 1 mile (2 km) of the Iguazu River.
For those who prefer city life over roughing it in the wilderness, Argentina’s urban landscapes offer a great deal. In Buenos Aires there are many architectural wonders including the Basilica de Lujan, the Basilica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, and the national landmark: the Basilica de Santo Domingo. Also, the United States has the White House while Argentina has the Pink House (Casa de Rosada) which sits the executive branch of the government. For those who enjoy sports, check out the Bombonera soccer stadium, and just because Buenos Aires is a large city does not mean it lacks greenery. The Bosques de Palermo is the largest park in the city, and fans of the musical Evita, should note that Evita Peron’s final resting place is at the Cementerio de la Recoleta.
Shopping
Argentina is described as having a love affair with beef. Leather ware is a popular buy and no matter what your budget is, you can find something that suits your needs. From leather shoes to leather wallets to leather jackets, Argentina has some of the finest for a fraction of the cost in other countries. Other popular buys are brilliantly colored mountain stones that are carved into beautiful vases, bowls, jewelry, and anything else you can think of. These lovely pieces can be found in many shops throughout the country. Argentina also has many shopping malls including Abasto which is a huge mall located in Beunos Aires, and on the other end of the spectrum the Hippie Fair near the Cemetery Recoleta (burial site of Eva Peron) is a popular place to browse for a variety handicrafts.
Nightlife and the Arts
Buenos Aires is the premier city in Argentina for nightlife. Dance clubs blaring electronic music and Drum N Bass are popular as well as more low key pubs and bars featuring jazz, folk, 80´s and 90´s American music and more. Of course no night out in Argentina is complete without venturing into a tango bar.
For theater buffs, the Teatro Colon is a must see. Some of the world most famous opera singers make appearances there and it is also host to ballet and its own philharmonic orchestra. Buenos Aires is also home to many art museums and cultural centers in which the latter usually offers tango lessons.
